Owning the Room: Painless Public Presenting Workshop with Alyson Connolly
Limited Capacity filling up

Public Speaking ranks as one of the highest anxiety producing experiences that most people will face. But it is also one of the keys to success for many people in business. You may be an expert in your field, but if you can’t communicate that expertise to others, it will remain your secret.

When you make presentations to clients, describe the future of your company to your employees, or even speak to colleagues around the water cooler, your public speaking skills can be the difference between success and failure. Your delivery and overcoming the anxiety of public speaking is the key to reaching your potential.

I treat public speaking as a performance. Just as an athlete gets keyed up when he/she is ready to perform, you must have a certain amount of energy when you get up in front of people to make your presentation. The goal is to control that energy through preparation, breathing techniques and understanding the psychology of the speaker/audience relationship.

Workshop - Owning the Room:

You know your product inside and out. You start your pitch to prospective buyers and you freeze forgetting what to say, so your pitch goes out the window. This workshop gives you techniques to take charge so you can speak with authority.

About Alyson Connolly, author of Public Speaking Skills for dummies:

I started out as a child actor, in the first musical that CTV ever produced: The Magic Trumpet. I pursued a BFA in Acting at the University of Alberta. I spent ten years as a professional actor, and began teaching during this time. In 2012, I returned to school in the Masters in Theatre Voice Pedagogy program at the University of Alberta.

My master’s thesis was on Performance Anxiety in Public Presenters. For two years I was immersed in courses as varied as Speech Science to research papers on the plasticity of the brain and the breath techniques of professional actors. It gave me a more complete understanding of the things that influence our voice, speech and presentation.

Whether a mid-level manager speaking to their team, a lawyer speaking to a jury, or a professor speaking to a lecture theatre, I want to bring joy to public speaking and help people like you find your voice so you can succeed on your own terms, just as I have.

B Corp 101: Learning to Measure What Matters
Limited Capacity filling up

B Corps make up a global movement of entrepreneurs who are dedicated to making a positive impact, whether it’s by improving the livelihoods of their workers, strengthening their community ties, or revolutionizing current green practices. The common thread linking Certified B Corporations®, such as Alberta-based Chandos and Fiasco Gelato, is that they were created and are run by people who define success as more than money – and they measure it using the B Corp assessment. This assessment will show you the ways your company has a strong and beneficial impact, as well as areas for improvement. If you are a business owner or employee interested in the B Corp Certification – or simply looking to complete an impact ‘health check’ for your business – then this seminar is for you!

Artificial Intelligence in Edmonton | CBC Edmonton Stage
Join us at the CBC Stage in Edmonton City Centre Mall for a showcase of our city's unique entrepreneurial identity, startup community & culture of innovation!

We’ve all heard of Boston Dynamics and the fascinating work they are doing to make lifelike AI bots that can open doors, do handsprings, and eventually take over the world in a post-apocalyptic action scene, but what we often neglect to discuss is that this type of AI is far from the norm of what’s being built in the tech sector. Some of the world's best talent is doing AI research in Edmonton, and while we aren't building the world's first computer that can think and act for itself, we are building incredible companies using innovative artificial intelligence solutions.

Sit down with Cory Janssen, CEO of AltaML, Craig Knox, CTO of DrugBank and Patrick Pilarski, Amii Fellow and Associate Professor at the UofA to learn about the real life ways that any industry can integrate AI into their company. Whether it be to create internal efficiencies, optimize a business process, or advance and scale their operations, the founders of these fast-growing Edmonton companies will chat about unsexy AI and the integral role it plays in the innovation of their businesses.

Thank you to our presenting partners:

AltaML - We conceptualize, develop, and commercialize ML software products. AltaML partners with organizations using a co-development model where we can provide our technical and strategic expertise to build transformative applications using applied AI/ML.

DrugBank - DrugBank is a curated pharmaceutical knowledge base for precision medicine, electronic health records, and drug discovery. We collect, curate and organize all the important information about drugs into a single unified resource. All the knowledge in DrugBank is backed by tens of thousands of scientific references. Whether you are trying to uncover a new drug for a rare disease, or make a medication reminder app: Drugbank makes your application smarter and your development time shorter.

Amii - The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is home to some of the world’s top talent in machine intelligence. Tightly affiliated with the University of Alberta and other members of the Edmonton technology ecosystem, we’re an Alberta-based research institute that pushes the bounds of academic knowledge and guides business understanding of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

CBC Edmonton - Tune in to CBC Edmonton for news and community information from your local public broadcaster. We bring you the stories, events and people that make Edmonton great. Find us online 24/7 at cbc.ca/edmonton and on social. You can also find us on the CBC radio app or tune your radio to 93.9FM/740AM. Here, you'll get the most up-to-the-minute conversation, weather, traffic and community news. We're here to make connections and find new ways to tell stories that are important to our city.

The Hows and Whys of Data Science for Alberta Businesses
Limited Capacity filling up

Over the past few years, the global market has seen growing adoption of data driven tools and methods to help make businesses more competitive. It is hard to go a day without being impacted in some way by artificial intelligence and machine learning. Large successful companies use this technology everyday to reach consumers and improve efficiencies, but how can you leverage it?

In this presentation experts from Cybera (Alberta’s not-for-profit technology accelerator), will show you how data science can be leveraged by local entrepreneurs, small and medium size businesses and start-ups. We will discuss why data science projects are created for different organizations and how you can embrace it in your organization. This introductory presentation will showcase case studies and lessons learned from implementing data science projects in startup companies in Alberta.

About Cybera:
Cybera is a not-for-profit technology-neutral organization responsible for driving Alberta's economic growth through the use of digital technology. Its core role is to oversee the development and operations of Alberta’s cyberinfrastructure — the advanced system of networks and computers that keeps government, educational institutions, not-for-profits, business incubators and entrepreneurs at the forefront of technological change.
Working with government, education, and private sectors, Cybera is creating a community that champions vital networking and computing services and utilities for everyone, everywhere. We also provide member organizations with unbiased, highly skilled expertise on technology products, processes or services, and access to shared IT tools.

UAlberta Artificial Intelligence Seminar: Combining Light and Machine Learning to provide insightful predictions
Limited Capacity filling up

This Friday (Oct 25th) the AI Seminar welcomes John Murphy, who will talk about Stream Technologies from noon to 1pm at room ETLC E2 001. Pizza around 11:45am. More information below.

Abstract: Machine learning models, or Algorithm applications (Aapps), are designed to analyze pixels and spectral features combined with shape information to identify a particular target. The target could be a disease or fungus on a plant, the level of protein in a sample of seeds, nutrients in soil, a deformed object, cancer cells, or other things a business finds value in detecting. Stream Technologies has pioneered and specialized in developing multi-band convolutional neural nets that offer unprecedented accuracy over spatial analytics alone. Their experience in machine learning has grown into an offering (Stream.ML) that can enable the wider use of these technologies.

Bio: John Murphy is a graduate from the University of Alberta, is CEO and co-founder of Stream Technologies Inc., a startup in the photonics / analytics space. John has over 30 years of technology commercialization experience, including founding and growing multiple start-ups. He is active on several advisory boards, Chairman of nanocluster Alberta, is a local angel investor, and was on the founding board of the A100 Organization. John works from Stream Technologies' offices at the Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) in the Edmonton Research Park on the Southside of Edmonton. Through the collaboration and mentorship of John and others at ATC and the UofA, now over half of the Tech companies at the ATC are incorporating AI/ML into their solutions.

Though talks may be of a technical nature, seminars are open to all levels of experience including expert researchers and beginner enthusiasts!

Please note: seating is first-come-first-seated with priority given to students. Doors will close once capacity is hit.
